(LLPEL) Low level photoluminescent escape lighting

Low level photoluminescent escape lighting is an acceptable alternative to electrical emergency lighting and complies with the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005, Article 14, Paragraph (2) sub-paragraph (h) (RRFSO).

The system is an compliant alternative to electrical escape lighting once a building has been risk assessed for the suitability of the system. The system isn't a one size fits all solution and may not be suitable for all buildings or applications, however in the majority of cases the system will fulfill the requirements of the RRFSO and once risk assessed and fitted, electrical emergency lighting may no longer be necessary.

Does the system work?

Yes the system does work and has been in use in many countries around the world for many years now. In some countries it is now a legal requirement to fit low level photoluminescent systems. The USA being just one of those countries.

What's the catch and why haven't I seen these systems before in the UK?

There's no catch and you haven't seen these systems in the UK before because up until recent years UK Fire Services have generally resisted change, particularly when it comes to a subject that they are not familiar with. Things are gradually changing and some Fire Services now accept that these systems can and do work as stand alone systems. Ironically Fire Serices have been using photoluminescent materials on the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for some years now, such as their breathing apparatus (BA) dials and markings on the back of the BA sets.

Are the systems expensive?

Photoluminescent systems cost approximately half the cost of conventional electrical emergency lighting and here's the real beauty of these systems, there are no additional maintenance costs, unlike electrical systems.
